Quote of the Month---
"I know what fear feels like.  It's a thief in the night who robs your strength.  I know what hopelessness feels like.  It's an enemy who defeats your will.  I felt those things once before.  I will never let them in again.  I'm an American.  And I choose to fight.  Don't give up hope.  Be strong.  Have courage.  And fight." ---Senator John McCain (AZ), our presidential nominee

BONUS Quote of the Month---
"Don't underestimate the capacity of Democrats to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.  Don't underestimate our ability to screw it up." ---Senator Barack Obama (IL), their presidential nominee

1.  President's ReMARKs

Please come to our last meeting of 2008, on October 23 at 7 PM.  We plan to have a huge turnout and will have a very busy meeting.  The excitement for the November election is building!  Please see our four Arlington Republican State House candidates and also to hear about the future of Tarrant County Courts from local judge Sharen Wilson.

We've got some great candidates out there, and some of them are going to speak to us at the October meeting.  Incumbent state representatives Diane Patrick, Bill Zedler, Todd Smith, and candidate Bill Burch will all speak about their campaigns and our election prospects.

In this election, don't believe what the media tells you!

At a state and national level, there are conservatives wanting to take our congress back from the liberal democrats and put us back onto financially solid ground.  Not by promising bailout packages for wall streeters or handing out "free" checks to us.  But instead by encouraging a stronger ownership society and letting us keep our money through tax policies instead of handing it back as though they were Santa Claus.  The future of the Republican Party begins today, and we're the people who will get it started!

Mark R Hanson, OD, 52, is President of the Arlington Republican Club.

2.  Legislative Alert:  Obama Wants to Give Tax Cuts to Those Who Don't Pay

According to Barack Obama, he will give 95 percent of all American workers a tax cut.  However, he fails to mention that his tax plan includes sending a 'refund' check to millions of tax filers who pay no personal income taxes.   Don't we have a name for that type of wealth redistribution?  Could it be welfare?

Obama's plan called, "Making Work Pay" provides for a $500 refundable tax credit to every worker or $1,000 for each working couple.  A large number of middle-to-lower income workers who have no tax liability after taking tax credits and deductions, will be given the equivalent of the tax cut in the form of a check directly from the U.S. Treasury.  Where will the money come from?  How about a tax increase on "the rich." In his own words, Obama stated recently, "We need to spread the wealth around."

According to figures supplied by the I.R.S., one-third of all filers paid no tax in 2006.  Under Obama's plan all of these tax filers with little or no tax liability will receive a "tax cut" when they pay no taxes at all.  That is, they will receive a transfer payment meaning the government will transfer money from one group of citizens to another.

According to Phil Kerpen, policy director at Americans for Prosperity, "What Obama is really talking about doing is mailing a check, and to me, that looks more like a welfare program than the kind of real tax relief that would encourage work, savings and investment."

Whatever Obama wants to call it, this "tax cut" will have little or no effect on our struggling economy.  On the other hand, McCain wants to reduce taxes on corporations, capital gains and keep the Bush tax cuts in place.  History tells us that cutting taxes increases revenues to the Treasury and promotes economic growth that benefits everyone.    Conversely, "spreading the wealth around" has proven to create nothing but larger government and more dependency.

Anne Coker is 4th Vice President of The Arlington Republican Club and owns a business that sells pre-employment tests.
