1. President's ReMARKs: Whatever Happened to "America
First?"
Have you noticed the recent headlines about our
Presidential candidates having to fire lobbyists for foreign governments? Hillary fired Mark Penn, her chief
strategist, for lobbying for the Colombia government on a free trade agreement before the
US Senate.
Doug Goodyear, who was to run the GOP convention this
year, was fired because his consulting company was once hired to improve the
image of Myanmar's junta.
McCain's senior campaign manager Rick Davis is involved in controversy
since he partially owns Davis Manafort, a firm hired by a Ukrainian political
party supported by Vladimir Putin.
It goes on and on.
Bob Dole represented Dubai
in the ports deal. I know people have a
right to make a living, but there is too much representation of foreign
governments and industries in Washington DC. The
American people have a Constitutional right to petition the United States
Government but foreigners don't and should not. Our elected officials are
supposed to be the citizen's lobbyist, but are they? Why is the trade
deficit so obscene?
My point is who is representing Americans? Is
everything in America for sale in Washington DC?
Mark R. Hanson is the President of the Arlington
Republican Club.

2. Legislative Alert: Special Election Losses Give House GOP a
Wake-Up Call
Republicans were sent an ominous message with the loss of
three special elections in Illinois, Louisiana, and Mississippi. All were
long held GOP House seats. To add insult
to injury, there is the recent scandal regarding rising GOP star Vito Fosella
(NY) who was arrested for drunk driving and admitted to fathering an
out-of-wedlock child which endangers the retention of his House seat.
Finally, hoping to stop the bleeding, House Republicans have gotten the message
that they need to come up with a new agenda and platform to avoid greater
losses in November.
Former Speaker Newt Gingrich warned the GOP they could
face a "real disaster" on Election Day and called for an emergency conference
of Republican House members. He recommended that House GOP leader John Boehner
(OH) come back with a new plan and agenda by Memorial Day.
House leaders took his advice. Kay Granger, Vice Chair of the Republican
Conference, unveiled a blueprint that outlines challenges the Party believes
are challenges to the American family.
She will also introduce a long-overdue energy policy. The idea is that
this will give House candidates and members a single agenda to rally around and
present to the American people.
A memo from the House GOP leadership stated, "we say that
Republicans will deliver 'the change you deserve.'" With Congress's
approval rating hovering around 20%, hopefully the GOP will be able to come up
with a "New Contract with America" in order to protect existing Republican
House and Senate seats and increase their numbers.
It has been proven time and time again that when
Republicans run on a conservative platform they triumph. House Republicans need to return to the values
that brought them a resounding victory in 1994: lower taxes, smaller government, fiscal
responsibility, strong national defense, and a sound energy policy.
Anne Coker is 4th Vice President of the Arlington
Republican Club and is owner of a company that markets pre-employment
assessments.

3. Guest Columnist:
Rep. Kelly Hancock (HD-91)
For over a year, there has been incessant talk about the
security of our 1,254 mile border. Texans, along with the entire nation,
are increasingly concerned about our safety and the preservation of our illegal
immigration laws.
During the 80th Legislature, we attempted to pass HB 13,
a bipartisan effort, which would have created the Governor's Border Security
Council, as well as, allocate hundreds of millions of dollars in both state and
federal funds to the border region over a two year period. While HB 13
failed to pass, state lawmakers are already in the process of figuring out how
to solve the border security issue next session.
Recently, Chairman Warren Chisum (R-Pampa) took a trip
down to the border region to see situation first-hand. In an editorial
about his visit, Chairman Chisum said, "The state is confronting the challenges
at the border with a primary emphasis on prevention. And, while barriers
can be effective in certain heavily-trafficked areas, closely coordinated
local, state and federal law enforcement resources give us our best chance to
hit our target: reduced crime and a secure border."
Although border security is a federal issue, Texas is making progress on its own through funds and
man power. Our hard-working Border Patrol and local law enforcement
agents are doing their best to curtail the influx of illegal immigrants,
illegal drugs and cartel violence. We owe them our deep gratitude and
undying support as they continue in their efforts.
The legislature does not want to shut our border
down. It is a vital part of our economy. Furthermore, we are not
trying to shut out immigrants who are trying to attain the American dream of
prosperity, self-sufficiency, and a better life, but we do want to ensure that
anybody coming into this country, and into our state, does so legally.
Our immigration laws are not set up to be elitist, but to protect each and
every American already living in this country from harm and terrorism.
Let's all remember that America is a melting pot of cultures, religions and
races. It is what makes our country great and the most sought out place
to live. However, having the privilege of living in this country also
mean you must abide by the laws of this country, including those on
immigration. I assure you that as your state Legislature, we will
continue to look at ways to solve the issues of border security and illegal
immigration in order to ensure the safety of each and every Texan.
May God bless you.
