1.  President's Remarks:  2010 Preview

A healthy and happy 2010 to everyone!

I am so pleased to be your President for the next two year term.

I anticipate that this year will be an exciting one for the Arlington Republican Club and for Republicans in general. As the promises of the Obama Administration fall flat, our star is rising.

In Tarrant County, as you know, our star has long been in ascendance. That is why we were able to field 83 candidates, compared to 20 Democrats.

Therefore, in the interest of bringing you the information you need in order to be an informed voter, our first two meetings this year will be candidate forums.

In January, we will bring you the contested state House of Representatives races that affect Arlington, local contested Justice of the Peace races, as well as a selection of other hotly contested races.

In February, we will bring you the rest of the contested county wide races, including the Judicial races, County Judge, and the District Attorney race.

In March, we will bring you the School Board and City Council races that are scheduled for May, 2010.

At the end of the year, we will once again have a candidate forum so that we can all "get behind" our Republican selections before the general election.

As always, our format will be the same as in prior years. We will accept written questions from the audience, with an eye towards using questions that can be fairly posed to all candidates in the race. For those questions more tailored towards an individual candidate, please feel free to ask the candidate yourself either before or after the meeting.

Once again, I am delighted to be President of such an outstanding club. Please contact us if you have any questions or suggestions at the contact information on our website, or just let us know at a club meeting. We do look forward to seeing you there!

Sincerely,

Lisa Callaghan, President
Arlington Republican Club

2.  Legislative Alert:  Massachusetts, 41st Vote

My report requires a little revision since our victory in Massachusetts, which leaves me giddie with happiness!  Yippee-Yi-Yo-Ki-Yeah!!!  Welcome to the U. S. Senate to the Junior Senator from Massachusetts, Scott Brown, Republican!  As we enter the 2010 election cycle, I submit a good question for all conservatives to ask ourselves - Since we "blew it" in 2006 and 2008, what has changed since then, and why should we be optimistic in 2010?  I certainly do not propose to be a prophet, but I firmly believe that Scott Rasmussen (the most accurate pollster in America), provides the best daily snapshot of the "pulse of the nation."

An overview summary is as follows:

Rasmussen's daily Presidential Approval Index - Obama has dropped 48% in his 1st year in office (+30% to -18% on 12/31, which is unprecedented in modern presidential politics).  In the Generic Congressional Ballot (party preferring their own congressman) - Republicans have improved 12% (from -7% to +5%).

He reports that 73% of Republicans are out of touch with the base of their party.  This tells me that the dots that Reagan connected to the base have been disconnected in 06 & 08, but are going to be reconnected between grassroots conservatives and many new challengers rather than incumbents.  Another way of summarizing this is - this election will not be "business as usual."  I submit more incumbents will be defeated than ever before in history.  Congressional approval was 16% the last I recall.

My criteria for earning my vote is:

Which candidate is the closest to being the conservative that would carry on the Reagan Revolution?  Since Rasmussen also reports that conservatives outpoll liberals by a 40% to 20% margin.  That offers tremendous 2010 optimism that was unheard of in 2008.

In order to win the House, we need another +54 seat pickup similar to the 1994 Republican takeover, plus a dozen or so gain from Demos that are switching to the Republican Party or are resigning because their lucrative pension is more desirable than facing the repercussions of a terribly unpopular Obama administration.

Is Obama's unpopularity greater than Clinton's was in 1994?  We need 10 senate seats (as of Tuesday, January 19th), which seemed impossible a year ago.  However, considering the overwhelming disfavor Grassroots America and Town Hall meetings are showing, the Republicans are now inching closer to that possibility in 2010 and certainly by 2012.

As Rasmussen reports, Senate Republicans are leading in 9 of the 10 states needed and tied in the 11th (Mo).  In addition, they are leading in the Governors races in 10 states (Perry leading Hutcheson 11% in Texas) and remember we just won upset victories in VA and NJ.

If I were to point to the greatest single factor I believe Grassroots America is upset with most incumbents (both R's & D's) it would be spending, especially explosions in pork barrel and earmarks.  The Club for Growth www.clubforgrowth.org ranks all congressmen as to their anti-pork scores.  How can Kay Granger defend her 2007 & 2009 RePork Card rating of "21%" and "7%", when compared to Jeb Hensarling's 100% both years?

Similarly, how can Sen. Hutcheson defend her "Porker of the Month" title "awarded" by CAGW (Citizens Against Government Waste).  It would also be hard to explain both Kay's stances on pro-choice to conservatives.  Neither of these positions support my objectives of trying to carry on the Reagan Revolution.  Secondly, voters in the Massachusetts race were interviewed to find out what issues were most important in securing the Brown victory.  National Security came in as one of the most important reasons they voted for Brown.  So I submit to you that spending, security, and the unemployment situation will be the deciding factors in the upcoming races.

During my 38 years, as a party activist and sometimes election judge/precinct chairman, I have observed that all votes come from either Statesmen or Politicians.  The difference being that a Statesman can defend his/her vote because it is consistent with their rhetoric, whereas a Politician cannot.  Each have the freedom in this country to vote as they see fit, but we as Grassroots America Voters have that same freedom to either praise or expose them as Politicians.

In the coming two months, I submit we have two challenges:
  1. Recognize the critical crossroads that this nation faces, roll up our sleeves, respectfully choose the statesman we believe can best "undo" 2006 & 2008 and work like never before to identify like minded voters and then get- them to the polls in March
  2. Unite together and respectfully remove any and all ill effects resulting from the competition of the primary.
We have never faced more important elections than in 2010 and 2012, but...neither have we ever faced a greater opportunity (this year's optimistic shift in conservative momentum) to take back the House, the Senate and the Presidency.  We must keep it this time by returning to basic conservative principles that were so successful in the Reagan era, which was the last time there was a true connection of dots between Washington and Grassroots America.  Let us all unite working together to reconnect those dots and with God's help save this great nation.

And special thanks to Don Shipe for allowing me to use his county legislative report as the basis for this article.

3.  "Going Rogue": A Book Review

DalePalin

(Picture provided by Chip Pierce)

Hello Everyone, Top of the Day to You.  BOY!  Was that a really good book or what!

The below 'might' be of interest to you as it concerns my own 'small' review of Sarah Palin's book, Going Rogue.

My thanks to Dr. Mark R. Hanson, O.D., and immediate past President of the Arlington Republican Club concerning his Christmas gift to me, presented at our club Christmas party;  'THE' perfect gift, Going Rogue!

Recently finished this fantastic book and highly recommend it to everyone.  This book not only explains 'everything' in detail, it is also exceptionally funny, and it makes you laugh out loud.  The details of her life are fascinating.

This book will also make you a bit angry in places when you discover how bad, how really bad, some people on the left can be.  In fact, even some of our own people cannot be trusted, as she explains.

This gift has turned out to be one of best books ever written in the history of recorded time...

Oops, did I show my bias from that remark?

This puppy takes forever to read because you keep going back to 're-read' parts of it in order to better understand.  As it turns out, the Governor is also an expert in the field of energy;  exploration, drilling, pipeline construction, distribution, environmental, plus pricing with taxation.

Add to that, she knows how to; reduce government intrusion into your life and that of your business, and reduce it's spending, plus reduce taxes and set basic parameters for business to prosper, at all levels.  And so much more.

What a book!

What a dynamic political leader!

And she is really funny.

This is a must read book, as it is that good...

Everything is explained, in absolute, straightforward, honesty...

Although the book does cover the election, it is about so much more, then simply that one small sliver of time.  And in those few pages, she takes to task the entire media wing of the Hard-Democrat party, but while taking the high road in a matter-of-fact series of explanations.  As she explains; when they cannot talk about the issues at hand, they attack you, complete with illustrations, of course.

AND THEN, when you read those last few pages, there is a profound admiration and appreciation about someone who never yields her core beliefs of conservatism and then, along the way, shows you how to make your state and the nation a better place for all, with pride and clarity.

Here is hoping that we can pull together a Palin/Romney ticket for 2012.

Thanks again Mark.

Now, my wife is reading it and then Rhonda Lewis wants it and the list continues.  The only error made in reading this book was not marking selected passages for future reference, so, re-reading a second time is in order.  Man, this book is both informative and funny, or was that said already?

Please take care.

4.  The Future of the Conservative/Libertarian Movement

Many commentators and pundits on the left have pronounced the death of the conservative movement or proclaimed the rule of liberalism for the next generation. With the election of 2008, one could assume that conservatism was rejected with the nomination of then Senator Barack Obama, liberal, and Senator John McCain, a man who was seen as independent and not a professed conservative.

In the run-up to the election of 2008, conservatism was pushed to the wayside at times by the administration of President George W. Bush and also by many in Congress.  Only a few stood as a beacon of conservatism and were pronounced zealots and even out of touch. I think it is a fair assessment that the eight years that President Bush held office, are not to be brandished as a full reflection of conservatism. I believe that there is a misconception of conservatism in society today that needs to be clarified by a clear statement of principles.

From the days of Senator Barry Goldwater to the days of President Ronald Reagan, to the present, rifts have arisen regarding the extent of civil liberties and non-interventionist foreign policy that have caused many to break away from calling themselves conservative to calling themselves libertarians.  This is what poses a problem for the future of the conservative/libertarian movement when members of the same movement berate their own over conflicting views other than the substantive principles that make up who we are as conservatives.  To the contrary, the formation of tea parties and "9/12" groups have sparked many who share common principles regarding our country, our founding, and the purpose of our government, to rally together on matters of principle and not party.

What will make the future of the conservative movement last will not be a certain figure like a Goldwater or a Reagan, but rather the understanding that we may disagree in certain areas but that the principles that matter most, what our founders intended in the formation of the Bill of Rights and our Constitution, are kept and protected.  A movement is only as strong as the people that comprise it.  Unity, community, common belief, and common goals are what will propel the conservative movement on for generations to come. Some have made the claim that the Reagan revolution (reign of conservatism) has long since ended, but it took until 2008 for the left to form a counter-revolution to the policies that helped make America prosperous for almost thirty years.

When America was fighting for her independence, the British and the Spanish tried to undermine her unity by attempting to make deals with the different colonies.  If one colony had broken from our then loosely federated government, the French would have perceived our fight for independence as a lost cause and could have ceased aiding our fight for independence.  In other words, we must remember that we are fighting for the same principles and we must not let issues or party interfere with our common cause.
